As large-scale sculptures can be referred to all those sculptures, which are characterized by a particular size to other sculptures. As a special form of sculptures, large-scale figures are usually very tall or wide and can be grasped visually in an easy way.

The production of large sculptures has a very long tradition. Although little has changed in the manner of construction of sculpture, the materials have changed as time goes by. Today, in addition to traditional materials industrial materials are used.

One popular example for large sculptures is David by Michelangelo. This sculpture was created between 1501 and 1504 and is made of marble. Nowadays there are other materials which are used for the production of large sculptures. Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), a sculptor of modernity, for example, made his large sculpture "Endless Column" (1937-1938) of gold-plated steel. Other artists who have carving large-scale sculpture, are the German sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881-1919), the French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and the French-American artist Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935) as well as Edward McCartan (1879-1947).
